Just south of the big city of Seattle, lies a smaller, suburban city known as Burien. The city has a population of over 20,000 people, but still has a small-town feel. Burien became a part of King County in 1993; it had previously been considered unincorporated. Though Burien is not as big as some of the nearby cities like Seattle and Bellevue, it still has everything to offer. Parks, shopping and community events come together to make Burien a desirable place to live. It is a part of the Highline School District and has one high school, one middle school and several elementary schools. Burien’s downtown is in the process of being renovated to make improvements. The new downtown will feature a 70,000 square foot retail center and a new library. A number of new condominiums are also in the works. Other than the new residencies, Burien has a wide variety of other choices from homes to apartments.

Burien has some great things to offer as a town. A large number of parks provides a good way to spend time outdoors and get some fresh air. The Ed Munro Seahurst Park is one of the best, especially in the summer months. It lies on the shores of the Puget Sound, so there is always a beautiful view of the water. A sandy beach is great for relaxing by the sea or building sandcastles with your family. Trails, picnic areas and a play area are also on location. Seahurst Park’s setting is a perfect spot to learn about marine and plant life. This said, it is frequently used as a field trip destination for students and for programs such as King County’s Environmental Science Center. Burien also has a few parks with playfields and basketball courts to be used for both recreation and city-organized sports. Burien’s Community Center exemplifies the city as a cohesive community. There one can find programs and classes for any age, but especially for teens.
Dance classes, babysitting certification and field trips are among the many activities offered. The field trips range from fun things, such as ski trips, to more practical trips, such as college campus tours. The community center also has a Friday night “Late Night,” where teens can go to play games, eat and socialize. In addition, Burien has a Farmer’s Market for residents to purchase some of the freshest produce around. Here, farmers and producers bring their products to sell it directly to the public. The market runs from May to October, every Thursday afternoon. Burien’s variety of amenities and community dedication make it an excellent city to consider.
