Kirkland is a city located east of Lake Washington, commonly referred to as "The Eastside." It is west of Redmond, and its downtown is located on the shores of Lake Washington. Many employees of Microsoft, and Google also reside in Kirkland. The city is served by the Lake Washington School District, and has a number of both public and private schools to choose from. Also located in Kirkland is Lake Washington Technical College and Northwest University. Kirklands prosperous reputation, along with its natural beauty makes it a great place to call home. Perhaps one of the most popular parts of Kirkland is its waterfront downtown. The charming streets draw in both Kirkland residents and visitors. The pedestrian-friendly area has a number of art galleries and fine dining to suit the clientele. Deciduous trees and a number of outdoor cafes all add to the appeal. In the spring, bright flowers fill hanging baskets; in the winter, white lights add to the holiday spirit. Kirkland also has a dedication to community. This said, there are a number of events put on by the city and community members throughout the year. The beauty of Lake Washington is unparalleled, and the plethora of waterfront parks in Kirkland allow for people to enjoy it. Juanita Beach Park is one of the most popular parks in Kirkland. There is a swimming area, watercraft rentals, fishing area and much more for visitors to enjoy.  Aside from its reputation for affluence, Kirkland also has a reputation for being environmentally involved. The city has a dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the area through a variety of programs. For years, Kirkland has attempted to be a sustainable city by protecting the water, land and air quality. In more recent times, an effort has been made to turn buildings and businesses "green". The city encourages local business owners and even families to become involved in "Kirkland Green" programs. Through programs such as this Kirkland has been able to do its part for global change. Considering its vibrant downtown, natural beauty and community programs, Kirkland is an excellent place to call home.
