Officially incorporated in February of 1959, the charming town of Black Diamond is a relatively new addition to King County. Black Diamond began as a coal mining town. The name Black Diamond was given to the town in honor of the Black Diamond Coal Company, the corporation that owned and operated the mine that supported the town. Coal from the mine was transported to Seattle on the Pacific Coast Coal Train. Oddly enough, the town is still home to just about 3,500 people, the same relative number that lived there during the days of coal mining. However, this area is beginning to see some growth, as Seattle and Bellevue commuters begin to make this ideally located town their home.
